The Ecuadorian Electric Corporation (CELEC EP) has added 20 megawatts (MW) of firm energy to the national electricity system after completing the rehabilitation of a turbine at the Termogas Machala plant. The TM4 unit, which operates on natural gas or diesel, is located in Bajo Alto, El Guabo, in the province of El Oro.
The restoration was achieved through comprehensive repairs to both the gas generator and the low-pressure turbine. These components had been out of service since February 2020 due to damage in the lubrication system.
To expedite the process, CELEC sent the equipment to a specialized workshop in Ludwigsfelde, Germany. There, major maintenance and full reconditioning were performed to restore proper technical conditions for safe and continuous operation.
After factory testing and return to Ecuador at the end of December 2025, the gas generator was installed and brought online in unit TM4. This action restored its thermal generation capacity and complied with President Daniel Noboa’s directive to accelerate recovery of unavailable units.
“This operational milestone represents the effective recovery of equipment that had been out of service for nearly six years. It is also the result of rigorous technical planning and coordination between CELEC EP staff and specialized workshops,” stated CELEC EP.
With this addition, CELEC EP strengthens its contribution of firm energy to Ecuador’s national electricity system and reaffirms its commitment to energy security. “With this incorporation, CELEC EP strengthens its contribution of firm energy to the national electricity system, reaffirming its commitment to Ecuador’s energy security,” said CELEC EP.
