More than $1 million has been invested in the installation of two new 1200 kW generator units and a 3 MVA power transformer at the Puerto El Carmen Thermal Power Plant, located in Putumayo canton, Sucumbíos province.
Under the leadership of President Daniel Noboa, Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP), through its Termopichincha Business Unit, enabled continuous operation of these new units starting October 14. The aim is to strengthen electricity supply in the border area with Colombia and ensure reliable energy for thousands of residents. This effort is expected to support local commerce and improve public services.
Before this upgrade, the plant had an effective capacity of 2.66 MW distributed among three generator groups, some operating for over thirty years. The introduction of modern generator equipment is expected to renew operational capacity and energy efficiency while reducing maintenance costs and fuel consumption.
According to CELEC EP, “This project, which today becomes an energy milestone for the Amazon region, responds to the objectives of policies for the development of El Nuevo Ecuador, promoting continuous electricity dispatch to Amazonian communities and ensuring high levels of reliable operation and availability within the national electrical system.”
