The Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP) announced on March 15 that it will carry out scheduled work at the Santa Elena II Thermal Power Plant on Monday, March 16. The goal is to energize and put into operation a 10 megavolt-ampere (MVA) transformer. This technical work will cause a partial restriction in electricity service between midnight and 4:00 a.m. in some areas of the Santa Elena province.
The installation of this equipment is expected to add about seven megawatts (MW) to the province’s electrical system. CELEC EP said this measure aims to reduce supply restrictions caused by irreversible damage to the ATQ autotransformer of 138/69 kilovolts (kV), which occurred on February 28.
The company stated that these efforts are being coordinated with the National Electricity Operator (CENACE) as part of ongoing steps toward normalizing service in the affected region.
CELEC EP thanked residents for their understanding regarding any inconvenience during the maintenance period and advised them to stay informed through official channels.
The addition of new capacity is intended as a temporary solution while longer-term repairs are considered, reflecting broader challenges faced by regional energy infrastructure.
