The Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP) announced on March 27 the start of a sewage infrastructure project in Rivera parish, located in the canton of Azogues, province of Cañar. The initiative is carried out through CELEC SUR and aims to improve sanitation for the community near the Alazán hydroelectric plant.
The project will establish a new sewage network to serve the area around Escuela Eloy Alfaro. Approximately 150 students from this school and their families are expected to benefit from improved sanitation conditions. CELEC EP is investing USD 53,000 for the construction of 600 meters of sewer lines and 17 inspection wells, which are intended to reduce waterborne diseases and create a safer environment.
This development comes after ten years during which residents have dealt with problems caused by an outdated sewage system as well as issues related to water accumulation and leakage. The project is made possible through a cooperation agreement between CELEC SUR and the Decentralized Autonomous Government of Rivera Parish, within the influence area of both Alazán power station and Mazar – Dudas Hydroelectric Project. Oversight will be handled by Empresa Pública de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado de Azogues (EMAPAL EP).
According to CELEC EP, these actions confirm its commitment to sustainable development in areas affected by its projects: “Mediante estas acciones, la CELEC EP ratifica su compromiso con el desarrollo sostenible de las zonas de influencia de sus proyectos, promoviendo el bienestar de las comunidades, la protección de los recursos naturales y la mejora de la calidad de vida de la población.”
