The Ecuadorian state power company, Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP), has committed $1.12 million to improve roads in the parishes of Luis Cordero, Taday, and Pindilig in Azogues canton, Cañar province. These areas are directly influenced by the Mazar and Alazán hydroelectric plants.
The agreement was formalized on November 25, 2025, through CELEC SUR, a business unit of CELEC EP. The cooperation agreement was signed with the Provincial Autonomous Government of Cañar during its 96th institutional anniversary session.
According to the agreement, CELEC SUR will contribute $1,120,134.09 while the provincial government will provide $213,595.08 for the project. The main work will take place on the María Auxiliadora – Laguna de Chocar road in Luis Cordero parish. This stretch is nearly three kilometers long and will include a 30-centimeter improvement layer, sub-base and base layers, a two-inch asphalt surface layer, and drainage improvements to manage rainwater runoff effectively. The road also supports tourism development at Laguna de Chocar.
The cooperation includes definitive studies for future roads: Taday – Biolán Road (10.2 km) at the border with Azuay province and Zhal ring road (4.25 km) in Pindilig parish. These studies could lead to further infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity and economic development in these communities. The agreement’s implementation period is set for 24 months from its signing date.
During a ceremony held at Casa de la Cultura Núcleo del Cañar, CELEC EP received the “Consejo Provincial del Cañar,” an award given to institutions contributing significantly to local progress through concrete actions and investments. Miguel Andrade, manager of CELEC SUR, accepted the honor on behalf of Antonio Jácome Pólit, CELEC’s top official.
“The Government of El Nuevo Ecuador, through CELEC EP, in fulfillment of its social and environmental responsibility reaffirms its commitment to communities and local governments within the area influenced by the Paute Integral Hydroelectric Complex through projects that strengthen territorial development and improve quality of life for thousands of Ecuadorian families,” stated representatives from CELEC EP.
