The Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP) delivered a new sanitary block to the Palmas Educational Unit in Sevilla de Oro, Azuay, according to an April 10 announcement. The project was carried out by CELEC Sur and is located in the direct area of influence of the Paute Integral Hydroelectric Complex.
This development addresses a need that had been present for twenty years among students and teachers at the school. The new infrastructure aims to improve hygiene, safety, and privacy for approximately 400 people who use the facility.
The total investment for this project was USD 17,411. Of this amount, more than USD 15,000 came from CELEC Sur and USD 2,271 from the Parroquial Government of Palmas. Oversight was provided by the Zonal Coordination of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture.
Technically, the project involved building separate sanitary blocks for men and women with toilets, urinals, sinks as well as potable water systems and wastewater evacuation. Additional features include rainwater drainage systems, electrical installations, complete architectural finishes and signage to ensure functionality and safety suitable for children and staff needs.
“This intervention reflects the vision of the Government of El Nuevo Ecuador to promote concrete actions that improve quality of life for citizens—especially children,” said Miguel Andrade, manager of CELEC Sur during the handover event.
Cristina Moscoso, president of the Parents’ Committee at Palmas Educational Unit added: “After two decades there is finally an intervention like this one which shows CELEC EP’s social responsibility and commitment with communities in its area of influence.”
With this work now completed—the result of longstanding community requests—the national government through CELEC EP reaffirms its commitment to community development by supporting projects aimed at improving local welfare.
