The Ecuadorian Electric Corporation (CELEC EP) is conducting bathymetric studies at the Minas San Francisco Hydroelectric Plant reservoir as part of its preventive maintenance strategy. The goal is to assess sediment levels that have accumulated in the water intake area due to river flow.

These studies involve measuring and analyzing the reservoir’s bottom using technological equipment such as echo sounders, which determine water depth, and measurement stations that pinpoint exact locations for each data record. According to CELEC EP, “the information obtained constitutes a key input for planning sediment removal, protecting energy infrastructure, and ensuring the operational continuity of the plant.”

Specialists from GENSUR and CELEC SUR business units are carrying out this work while adhering to strict safety and efficiency standards.

The Minas San Francisco reservoir regulates the ecological flow of the Jubones River on the border between Azuay and El Oro provinces. Its location on Ecuador’s western slope is considered strategic because it complements power generation from Amazon basin plants during dry periods.

CELEC EP states: “With actions in territory, the Government of El Nuevo Ecuador, through CELEC EP, carries out work aimed at protecting strategic energy infrastructure and thus guaranteeing a continuous and safe supply of electricity for the country.”
