The Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP) has started a major maintenance operation on Generation Unit 4 of the Molino Hydroelectric Plant, located in Sevilla de Oro. The overhaul targets the 105-megawatt unit after two decades of continuous service. This plant is the largest within the Paute Integral Hydroelectric Complex and ranks as the second-largest in Ecuador, with a total capacity of 1,100 megawatts.
The maintenance work is being carried out in coordination with the National Electricity Operator (CENACE), following recommendations from CELEC EP technical specialists and equipment manufacturers. As part of the planned activities, technicians will dismantle the generator’s rotor to access key components for inspection and optimization.
The process involves completely disassembling machinery to inspect internal parts and replace worn components. The main goal is to extend equipment lifespan and ensure operational stability by adjusting critical parts and reducing vibrations.
Specialized technicians from the manufacturer, along with staff from CELEC SUR and the Turbine Research and Repair Center (CIRT), are participating in this effort. They use advanced technology to monitor turbine conditions. According to the established schedule, activities are expected to conclude in April.
Key tasks include removing the generator rotor to access the stator, restacking the stator core, replacing stator bars and temperature measuring instruments, maintaining electrical connections, changing out the turbine bearing heat exchanger, and replacing temperature sensors.
Wilson Enríquez, head of Molino plant, said: “These major maintenance activities are carried out after approximately 20 years of operation and are fundamental for preserving the useful life of generation units.” He added that about 25 technicians are involved in this project—including manufacturer specialists and staff from other business units—with a commitment to meet or even improve upon scheduled timelines.
This work forms part of CELEC EP’s annual maintenance plan. The company states it remains committed to ensuring stable and reliable electricity production for Ecuador through these actions.
