A four-year-old boy from Sucre has regained full intestinal function after undergoing a series of surgeries at Hospital Miguel H. Alcívar. The procedures were conducted by a multidisciplinary team to correct a congenital anorectal malformation that seriously affected his health.
The medical team implemented a staged surgical plan, with support from hospitals within the Public Health Network and complementary facilities. Randy Mendoza, the pediatric surgeon who led the intervention, stated: “The success of the procedure drastically improves the child’s quality of life, allowing for normal development.”
Francisco Mero, Medical Director at Hospital Miguel H. Alcívar, pointed out that while such treatment in private healthcare could exceed $50,000 in costs, the National Government provided it free of charge through the Ministry of Public Health.
Nelba Loor, grandmother of the patient, said: “I am excited; this operation saved my grandson’s life. Today we return home happy.”
Officials highlighted that this case demonstrates how government policies can ensure access to specialized healthcare services for vulnerable families across Ecuador.
