The Ecuadorian government, through the Ministry of Environment and Energy and executed by the Corporación Nacional de Electricidad (CNEL EP), has completed the construction of a new electrical substation called “Terminal Terrestre 2” in Camilo Ponce parish, Babahoyo canton.
The new substation features an 18/24 MVA transformer and covers approximately 1,700 square meters. The investment for this project was USD 2,361,700.26. The infrastructure is expected to strengthen the capacity of the local electrical system and improve supply management during outages or scheduled maintenance. It will directly benefit over 18,000 families in Babahoyo and support efficient growth in the area.
Minister Inés Manzano commented on the government’s strategy regarding infrastructure projects: “These works reflect the commitment of a Government that knows the realities of its territory and responds promptly to its people’s needs. Today we strengthen electricity service in areas with sustained growth, ensuring greater reliability and continuity for both households and commercial sectors, thus promoting local development.”
Ángel Erazo, General Manager of CNEL EP, emphasized how this facility would affect urban areas: “This first-class electrical infrastructure strengthens distribution systems in strategic urban sectors of Babahoyo, supporting its population and commercial growth. With this substation we increase operational capacity, optimize demand response, and reduce risks of service interruptions.”
With Terminal Terrestre 2 now operational, Babahoyo has three feeding points for its electrical network. This setup allows better load redistribution and more effective responses to high-demand scenarios.
