Marathon Sports released a review on Apr. 17 of the Asics Gel-Cumulus 28, focusing on its modern upgrades and continued reliability as a daily running shoe. The Gel-Cumulus line, first introduced in 1999, is now in its twenty-eighth version and remains a mainstay for runners seeking dependable cushioning and support.

The significance of this review lies in the enduring popularity of the Gel-Cumulus among both beginner and experienced runners. With running shoes constantly evolving through lighter materials and energetic foams, Marathon Sports highlights that reliability continues to be valued by many athletes.

According to the review, the Gel-Cumulus 28 introduces several updates such as FF BLAST MAX midsole foam for improved responsiveness, an upgraded PureGEL heel insert that offers softer landings, and a redesigned FLUIDRIDE outsole aimed at enhancing durability and traction. The engineered mesh upper is described as soft and breathable with added comfort features like extra heel collar padding and a flexible tongue design.

The road test conducted by Marathon Sports found immediate comfort out of the box due to these upgrades. Reviewers noted that while the new foam provides more bounce than previous versions, some users may find the fit too narrow in the toe box. The shoe is positioned as an everyday trainer best suited for easy miles or long runs rather than speed workouts.

Comparisons were made to other models such as Asics Novablast 5—which offers greater energy return but less durability—and Altra Experience Flow 3—which provides similar cushioning with a wider toe box option. Pros cited include improved ride quality from new foam technologies, enhanced shock absorption from PureGEL technology, durable outsole construction, and secure fit from engineered mesh uppers. Cons include limited room in the toe area and moderate performance during fast-paced runs.

Marathon Sports concludes that after nearly three decades of development across multiple iterations, the Asics Gel-Cumulus continues to offer balanced comfort suitable for most runners’ daily needs.
